PENARTH Arts and Crafts Ltd (PACL) are asking readers to help choose the design of the mosaic which will adorn the foyer floor of the new Pier Pavilion.

The Washington Gallery-based group want members of the community to tell them which is their favourite of four possible designs, produced by North Wales ceramic mural specialists Craig Bradgy Design.

They are on display in the Pier Pavilion shop on the Esplanade below Windsor Court flats.

PACL leader Maggie Knight said: “What we are doing is asking the visitors in the shop to vote for their favorite concept, and provide us with some feedback.

“It is another apect of the community engagement we have aimed to root the project in.

“The mosaics are all distinctly themed. It will, we hope, be spectacular and a real tourist draw.”

The designer of the four concepts at Craig Bradgy Design, David Pritchard, enjoyed regular trips to Penarth throughout his childhood, and said he had based each mosaic on a unique aspect of the town.

“I know Penarth well, and the seafront in particular,” he said.

“My parents are from Cardiff and both grandparents lived in Ely when I was a boy. We lived in Bargoed and visited family in Cardiff most weekends.

“Penarth was a place we’d go to be by the sea, to play, and for me to watch the paddle steamers, so it’s a familiar part of my childhood.

“My mother used to dance in the pavilion,” he added.

“Mention Penarth Pier to mum, and it won’t be long before the conversation moves to Canadian servicemen and their dance moves!”

And the project marks a change for David, who is more used to dealing with overseas clients.

“Nearly all the design work I am involved with is for clients in the Middle East, America and Russia, using photos as references and designing for an unfamiliar culture,” he said.

“It’s quite different working with personal memories embedded in the work.

“It’s good to see the pier being developed,” he added.

“I’m planning a visit to Cardiff with my mother soon, so I will make the trip out to Penarth for a stroll on the pier.”

Nick Powell, director of Craig Bradgy Design, called it a ‘great project’.

“It’s a bit of a novelty to be involved with something so public that is based in our own country, as so much of our business is based abroad and for private enjoyment,” he said.

“We are delighted to be involved.”

Anyone who remembers visiting the Pavilion or the Pier is invited to contact the Pavilion Project office so they can become part of the records been put together as an peoples’ archive.

When the Pavilion reopens, visitors will have access to stories from hundreds of people, including fascinating tales of its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s

The grant has been awarded to Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL) towards the refit of the Pavilion’s education spaces and delivery of the learning programme.

Heritage Lottery Fund has already offered revenue funding for an Education Officer with this post to be filled next year ahead of the building’s 2013 opening.

PACL already offers art education for disadvantaged groups through its Washington Gallery programme, established since 1998 with funding from a range of trusts and foundations including Children In Need.

Maggie Knight, Project Director, said the appointment, the result of a full tender process, was very important as the building schedule began to gather pace.

“The professionals we now have in place – most of them local firms – will be assisting PACL to deliver a project which we believe will have immense impact for Penarth and the region.”

“Our mission is to make this a facility for the whole community and also for visitors and it now requires us to work very hard to accommodate the wishes of all stakeholders.”
